An offer I CAN refuse...
November 10 - 2007

So I was at Meijer today grocery shopping, the usual stuff- and decided to check out the baby section for any good sales. When out of the blue I hear, "Ma'am, would you like to apply for a Meijer credit card and save blah blah blah"..

What the heck? Stores are now harassing their customers (a GROCERY store, no less- okay, it's a mega store that sells other stuff, but c'mon) while shopping with credit card offers?? Of course it wasn't the lady's fault who was working so I kept walking and said a firm no thank you.

Anyone else think that's ridiculous??

Life as someone's mama...
September 10 - 2007

This week Wednesday, our Alexa will be 3 weeks old. Here's what fills my days lately- sometimes it feels like my day really has no beginning or end...(you parents out there can understand I'm sure)

- feeding

-changing

-sleeping (whenever possible, so not much)

-rocking

-cuddling

-taking an occasional walk around the block

-trying to remember to give Dozer some lap time too

-eating wonderful meals cooked by family or friends

-online shopping for baby stuff we forgot

-attempting to check e-mail

-attending to a crying baby...which I must do now!

Ahh, parenthood- :-)

Bug Lovin'
August 05 - 2007

Those of you who know me, know that I don't particularly care that much about the kind of car I drive. Sure, I'd like it to be nice, whatever, but I am not a big car person. I mainly view them as hunks of metal that take my money in regular intervals.

But I have to give a little ode to our VW, (let me just clarify- the 1999 VW- the 1972 VW is still happily sleeping in our garage, and I don't think the "california raisin" will be leaving us any time soon) which is currently up for sale due to the fact that we are entering the land of parenthood and could use a roomier vehicle to accomodate our new addition + baby gear.

John and I both like the '99 VW so much that we've:

(1) contemplated using the truck with a car seat (not gonna work- unless we'd like to give our child whiplash as a newborn. it's a great vehicle too, great for hauling John's photo gear or bringing home furniture, but not to put a baby in)

(2) Considered actually owning 3 cars (4 if you count the '72 VW- but that one's considered "in storage" and we aren't driving it) We didn't consider that for long..darn insurance...:-)

(3) put off selling the VW as long as possible

So, somewhere out there is a person who can give our bug a loving home, and now we're trying to find who that is. (Plus, we need to pay for the new car.) Any takers? :-)

Things the pregnant lady misses right now...
July 12 - 2007

Yes, I know how you're all going to tell me it's all worth it. I know. :-) Just thought I'd vent a little.

My list, in no particular order...

- pants without elastic, spandex or any stretchy material of any kind

-single digit clothing sizes

-my feet

-abs...what are abs?

-sleep (without the aid of a gigantic pillow the size of a human)

-my husband (since husband has temporarily been replaced by gigantic pillow)

-the ability to watch oprah (or anything remotely touching on tv) without crying

-a day without heartburn

-running

-the ability to turn down ice cream

And now you need to go tell your mother how much you love her and appreciate her. There is nothing like experiencing motherhood yourself to realize what an incredible person your own mother is! Thanks Mom!!

Nesting is evil....!
June 23 - 2007

You're probably thinking of the typical "baby" to do list- buy crib, stock up on diapers, kiss sleeping 8 hours a night good bye, etc.. But no, all of that just isn't enough for me. I had to add on! :-) Call it nesting, whatever. We are in the middle of project central around here, in the midst of both of us running our own businesses.

Since my business has been recently blessed with lots of projects, we're finally able to afford to do some home improvements at the Pottenger house. Which of course, I want all of them done by the time our beloved baby girl arrives. I know, I know. We'll see....

So if you haven't heard from us lately, here's why:

Our current to do list...

- de/wallpaper & paint kitchen walls, cabinetry & trim (half done)

-purchase/install new dishwasher (this one's done -yay! A dishwasher that isn't older than we are!)

- remove/replace faulty can lighting in kitchen, fix dishwasher so it has a switch above kitchen sink (also done as of today!!)

- purchase/install new flooring in kitchen/hall (goodbye nasty carpet from 1989) we'll do this when the painting is done

- add water purifier (done! I love having this because I bought so much bottled water before), also replace sink faucet with pull- out sprayer

- FINALLY finish first floor powder room. (in progress) we finally ordered the fixtures for in here, but we need to fix the drywall first before we can paint

-Replace the second floor toilets that run like crazy (also ordered these)

I know. I am crazy. But so is my nesting instinct! And I know better that I will get nothing done for a few months with our new Pottenger around, so the more I get done now, the better.

Needless to say, we'll be posting pictures soon!! Back to work... :-)

How many jobs have YOU had?
May 20 - 2007

So as you all know, I am not the queen of the blogosphere. I am doing well if I get two blogs a month. Well, I recently came up with an idea... perhaps I can steal blog ideas from all of my witty friends and actually have something to write about! Thank Ms. Tammi N. for this one...

What a great blog topic that I did not think of. All the jobs I've had in my life...

Janatorial Assistant: I think my very first job ever was to help out at my dad's office. I remember emptying trash cans and cleaning the kitchen & bathrooms at Spirit Label with my mom when I was in junior high. I continued with this job for quite a while, into high school.

Label Shrinkwrapper/Re-Winder: Yet again, employed by dear old dad. Not the average high school job however, I got to run heavy equipment! Woo-hoo! I think I did more shrinkwrapping than rewinding (Shelbi was the rewinder queen) but this kept me busy for a couple summers. **For those of you uniformed, label re-winding is when you take a giant roll off a printing press, then re-wind it into little rolls of labels so they can be shipped out and packaged. (think of the kinds of stickers you'd get at the doctor's or dentist's office)** As dad always said. "get a good education or you'll end up in the label business'. (I graduated from art school with honors, by the way... :-))

Koalaty Time Childcare Center: This was another high school job. I Think what I really liked about it was no weekends and I never had to work late (3-6, after school). I co-"taught" a class of 2 year olds. This was so not my personality, but those kids were really fun! It made me not so scared of toddlers. This is the job where I learned how to change a diaper. I also learned that I hope my kids don't end up in a day care center if at all possible...

Red Lobster Employee: Eeww. I know. I attempted this one in college. This job lasted about a day. Right up to the point until the guy training my friend and I asked us if we'd like to see his "hidden piercing". We said no. And we didn't press charges.

Victoria's Secret: Another college job. Way better than red lobster. Notice how I went from a job with greasy nasty men in it to a predominantly female work environment. There was a reason for this. Other than being on my feet a lot and having anxiety dreams about lines at the cash register, this one wasn't so bad, and I got a discount.

Then, I moved back to Iowa with my parents after I got engaged, and worked at Homemaker's Furniture as an office clerk. I met some interesting characters here and got to see the seedy underworld of the giant furniture store industry. Glad that was not my forever job. But I got our mattress at below cost! (which was a great help to us poor newlyweds)

Administrative Assistant was my next job, after we got married. I was so grateful for this one and for the health benefits b/c we were putting John through school at the time. Excellent small company and bosses, however this job made me realize that I would poke my eyes out if I had to do schedules and type things for a living. I gained an extraordinary amount of respect for all of those who do this job daily. It was here that I first decided to pursue a design degree. (And, oddly enough, one of my former bosses there is now a mentor of John's and he and his wife are good friends of ours, as well as our neighbors!)

JC Penney, Custom Decorator: This was like a job for a designer wannabe. I had way, way too many samples weighing down my nissan sentra. I wanted to try things out, and that I did. I actually learned a lot about the window treatment industry, and that I did not want to be a part of it. It made me know that I wanted to learn and do all aspects of design, and that I also needed a formal education. (and now I work with a wonderful local window treatment shop who does this work for me!)

Pella Windows, file girl: Okay, that wasn't my official title but that's what I was. This was my interim temp job while I was waiting to start school at Kendall after I ditched the JCP job. Made me so glad I was going back to school, and there was a guy there that creeped me out. The office staff was nice though.

Intern/Design Assistant:  I had this one while at Kendall. This is the first job where I felt like I was actually doing something that was moving me forward. I am still friends with the owner of this company today, in fact. I learned so much about operating a small business and dealing with people and the ins and outs of design. Plus it always helps to be surrounded by people with impeccable taste- I think it refined my own style, and showed me I was in the right professsion.

Staff Designer at a construction company: I learned tons at this job. A lot of how to deal with contractors and builders, which is invaluable experience. More ins and outs of a small business too. But I also realized here that it was time to start my own little studio, something I've dreamed about.

This brings me to my wonderful, current occupation:

Refresh Design: (file girl, accountant, janitor, administrative assistant, designer, ceo-- a small business, in other words!) I feel so blessed to finally be able to have my own business. It is not all easy but let me tell you it's wonderful. Especially now with an addition to our family in the works. I love that I get to be creative, have flexibility, do something different every day, and get the privilege to work with all these great people. My clients rock! I know it's not brain surgery or saving children in Africa, but I love that the work I do directly affects people, and their lives.

But I know that none of this will compare to the ultimate and never ending profession of motherhood! Stay tuned on that one... :-)

My First Mother's Day
May 13 - 2007

I had an excellent first mother's day. (even though Baby Potts isn't here yet, I still consider myself a mama) My wonderful husband got me a gift certificate for a pregnancy massage (yay!) took me out to a wonderful lunch at Macaroni Grill (yay again!) where the waiter screwed up our orders but then gave us free desserts! (yay free dessert!) Then we spent the rest of the day at the beach (I'll post photos) with Dozer, relaxing in the beautiful weather. I told him that it would probably be the calmest Mother's Day I'd have in a long time... :-)

And also, much love and thanks to my own very special mom, and also to my special mom-in-law! There is no way to tell you how much I appreciate you and treasure you!!

The Biscuit Baby
April 20 - 2007
So my latest pregnancy obsession has been with biscuits. Yes, biscuits. I'm eating one now, in fact. I was getting them at KFC but decided it would probably be best to make some at home so I did that today.
The main reason right now is that it seems like everything, even drinking water can bring on nasty heartburn, however biscuits seem to be one of the few things I can handle. (I have temporarily given up some of my favorite spicy, tomato based and citrus foods...Dad A.- now I know what you went through when you had this all the time!!)

As I like to say, Nothing like carrying a baby to make your body feel like a science experiment! :-) Time for another biscuit...

Boys Vs. Girls
March 27 - 2007
So since we have to wait another three weeks for the ultrasound to hopefully find out if Baby Potts is a boy or a girl, I'm taking an informal poll. What do YOU think we're going to have?

Sweet Relief
March 11 - 2007

Ahhh.. Never thought 40 degrees could feel so much like springtime. :-) We enjoyed a nice warm sunny day (for Michigan March, anyway) and were able to get outside with Dozer for a while. I guess we'll enjoy it 'til the next snowstorm!

Splat...Splat...Splat...
March 08 - 2007

As I sit here in my office, I am serenaded by the wonderful sound of water hitting tupperware. Yes, that's sarcasm. Thankfully the water is not leaking inside, it's our 3-season porch.

Today, water started dripping from one of the light fixtures. Not good.

I love our house, don't get me wrong. It is a blessing to just have a house, I know. But in some ways it is testing me, living here in my potential-filled fixer upper. So easily could we bust out the credit card or home equity loan and go to town, but we all know that's just stupid.  (  http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xt0c6_snldontbuystuff) The debt is not worth it. We knew this would be a gradual process- one area at a time. So I work on my patience, and we fix things slowly.

Sometimes I feel a lot like my house-- a "potential filled fixer upper"-- drips and all. I keep hoping that God will *poof* magically change me into the person he designed me to be, not taking into account that salvation, too, is a daily process of renovation. And I won't be "done" until I'm not in this world.

So for now, I take pleasure in the improvements that we have gotten to make around the house. I remember the nasty carpet that used to be where our wood floors are, and the 80's wallpaper that has been replaced by fresh paint. And there is something so satisfying about that- the fact that we were there for the whole process- ugly broken beginning to beautiful renewed ending, and all the hard work in between. It was worth the wait.

I hope that's how God feels when He's done with me.

The Baby Made Me Do It...
February 27 - 2007

So I have been fighting the urge for about a week now to give in to my Krispy Creme craving. Usually, I do my best to avoid Krispy Cremes and such foods like the plague, given the fact that with my body type all I have to do is think about it and I gain 5 lbs.

But pregnancy has weakened this in me, (maybe due to the fact that none of my clothes really fit anymore, anyway) because I arrived home today from an appointment with a wonderful assortment of doughnutty goodness. (much to my husbands happiness)

It is my hope that by giving in this one time, I won't have to do this again. It is my hope...Anyway, what am I supposed to do? Weight Watchers kicks you out when you're pregnant. (wisely so, they say your doctor should be the one helping you with nutrition during a pregnancy, and I agree it's probably not the greatest time to try and lose a bunch of weight)

So, I am doing my best to eat healthy most of the time, and reign myself in to not go completely crazy just because I am with child. I guess fulfilling a craving every now and then is okay. And I know that in 6 months weight watchers will be waiting for me with open arms...

Feeling S.A.D.?
February 11 - 2007

Here it is again, February in Michigan. (for those of you lucky enough to be in warm weather locations, that means: snow, cold, and lack of sunshine) And for me, it's the time of year that I'm usually starting to go crazy...

Not that it's all bad, last weekend we had a great blizzard, and it was actually kind of fun to be stuck inside by the fire, all snuggly. We had a snow day from church (that's pretty rare), they shut down the malls and the movie theaters. So we walked over to our neighbor's house and made dinner together & hung out, it was tons of fun.

But really, it is getting old now. I already know the cause of my "seasonal affective disorder"-- it was having Christmas in Michigan. Sounds odd, I know, but since John and I have been married we've usually been able to break up the winter monotony with a nice trip to California, usually around Christmas.

The couple of years that we've had Christmas here have been great and really fun, but usually around now I start to miss that little break from winter. There's just something about a week or two of sunshine and seeing the ocean that make coming back to winter okay.

For now, I guess I just have to suck it up and realize that even winter is a beautiful part of God's creation. Yesterday we showed friends our DVD from Hawaii and that helped, just a little. :-)

Annoyance in Cyberspace
January 28 - 2007

I have recently been plagued with fradulent or "spoof" e-mails pretending to be from ebay and paypal. Thankfully, I am married to a technologically smart man who comes from a technologically smart family, so I checked them out and reported them both to the real ebay and paypal.

Both of them were advising "urgent action" needed for my account, blah blah, and wanted me to fill in my user name and pass word which of course I did not do. The real kicker was that the e-mail address they wrote to was not the e-mail address that I had the account under.

People must be falling for this I guess, or these idiots wouldn't be doing it. So if you get any emails like that- ones that kind of wierd you out- it always pays to forward them to the "real" company first and NEVER put in your personal info from an e-mail link.

To check my accounts I would log on through the internet-- not through their link-- and funny enough, none of their email claims were actually true when I checked my accounts.

People like this waste my time and do not make me happy. But at least I still have my "identity". Be careful out there!

American Idol Musings...
January 24 - 2007

Yes, I admit, I watch American Idol. (John watches it with me) It's our friend Christina's fault, she got us hooked when she lived with us a while back. If you don't watch the show (or haven't seen the hundreds of previews of it) then let me tell you right now is the point where everyone tries out, and more than half of them are awful singers.

I don't know what made me think of this, but as we were watching I started to get sad for all of these "fools" seeking their 15 minutes of fame. Some of these people genuinely think they have singing talent, and won't listen to anyone who tells them otherwise. No one can stomp on "their dream".

We as Americans are definitely dream obsessed. Not that this is a totally bad thing, but I think our problem lies in whose dream we are chasing. God designed us all, so obviously, He knows what "dreams" He has for us to fulfill- - how to find our ultimate, most fulfilling purpose. And then we have our own ideas...

For example, maybe God designed us with a wonderful mind to engineer things, to build bridges, do math, etc. Maybe by doing that we can achieve what God has designed us to do on earth. (note: why is it that we tend think that our natural talents are dumb and insignificant and other people's are wonderful and earth shattering?) But we get side tracked- engineering and math don't usually get you on TV-- no, I am destined to be a SINGER! YES! IT'S MY DREAM. And there goes another pathetic fool on American Idol who amuses us all for 2 minutes then that's it.

Don't get me wrong, I am a big dreamer. But I also want to make sure that the dreams I'm chasing are the ones God has designed me for~ not the ones I think I want because they're cool or get me attention. This is not an easy pursuit- but  what could be better than uncovering who God created you to be?

shameless family blog endorsement
January 21 - 2007
So I'm sure you all know by now that blogging is not exactly my passion. I do, however, love reading the blogs of my family and friends. One of my favorite blogs is my sister, Shelbi's. I think she is a great writer- the kind that can make you laugh and make you think in the same story. If you want to check out her deep thoughts, check out: http://flamingedna.wordpress.com/ And okay, since I enjoy reading all of your blogs, I will try and do better with my own too...

do you believe that God is good,do you trust Him?
November 16 - 2006

This simple question was asked recently during our pastor's sermon series at church. Simple, yet powerful, and I now stop and ask myself that everyday. It is calming and reassuring to utter those words every single day. A pause, even if brief, just to take my eyes off my own little world and focus on the Creator of the world... to remind myself that it is not about me, it is about God. That I am a part of HIS story, not the other way around. I have found that thought to free my soul lately. I have found that when I acknowledge it is all about God, I don't have much to worry about.

So if you ask me this Thanksgiving what I am Thankful for, I could give you a list a mile long- amazing family that I love, the fact that my dad is in excellent health after bypass surgery, the miraculous disappearance of a lump on my husband's neck- and that he is also in excellent health, financial provision as John & I launch our businesses, the fact that we are alive and breathing and have things to accomplish for Him.... all these and more are summed up in this:

God is good and I am working daily to trust Him more.

(p.s.- Kris- I think we are on the same wavelength-- God is good, all the time! :-))

Hawaii Withdrawals
July 09 - 2006

First let me echo other Pottengers by saying what a wonderful time we had. Nothing can compare! Here are some of my highlights/thoughts, not in any particular order:

- I enjoyed getting to see Kyle & Jen interact day-to-day. It's fun to see "young love" and it was also nice to get to know our new bro-in-law a little better. I think some of my favorite "interactions" were captured by John via the wedding video (Jen, you guys will love it :-)

- The night before we left California- girl talk between Peg, me and Jen. :-)

- The beach. Most of you know I love all forms of beach- lounging, sunning, and yes, the froufy drinks too. (Pina coladas!!) But not only was the scenery cool, so was the company. (talks with Peg especially)

- Getting the news that my dad was okay after his surgery. This one doesn't relate directly to Hawaii, but it was a very important part of my trip. (and the verse that Peggy shared with me was a constant comfort) I think one of my favorite days was when I got to talk to him & mom together on the phone.

- Not a highlight- getting food poisoning the first night in Kauai. The only thing that could make it not seem like paradise! I got way too familiar with that bathroom.

- Helicopter ride over Kauai. Breathtaking, and I got to take it all in with the man I love!

- The infamous boat ride- that turquoise blue water was mezmerizing. Loved the dolphins, and the nepali coast. Wow.

- Girls' Night- What an awesome time we had with our fancy desserts and great conversation. Also being serenaded by some rather large but well meaning Hawaaian men. Did I mention I love my California sisters?

- Braving the timeshare presentation with Kyle & Jen. :-)

- The culmination of events into the wedding. A perfect ending to our trip.

- The sunset on the beach, on the wedding day.

- Hearing all of the toasts at the reception, and just enjoying good food and each other's company.

- Too many more moments to mention, really. I'm already looking forward to going back!

Update on My Dad
June 04 - 2006

Thanks to all of you for your prayers and encouraging e-mails. My parents have definitely felt the support. I just wanted to update you all on his situation. When we went in for the angiogram (to determine the right treatment for the heart blockage) the doctor decided against an angioplasty (the balloon procedure we thought he was going to have) in favor of a bypass (due to the complicated nature of the blockage). This was a little surprising, but the good news is that it is only one blockage, and the type of bypass has quite a high success rate and low risk.

My dad goes in at 5:30am on Thursday (June 8) for the surgery, so your continued prayers are greatly appreciated. The surgery itself is supposed to be about 2 hours, and he will be in the hospital for around 5 days, but complete recovery takes several months. Once he recovers though, he will be able to exercise again and be active, and will feel like new.

When I was visiting, I was comforted by the outreach of many of their friends- we had people spontaneously come over and pray, sit with us at the hospital- we felt very blessed. So I pray that this will continue, that the peace of Christ fills their hearts, and ultimately they can walk away from this as a witness to God’s mighty power.

Thanks again for doing what Christians are meant to do—radiating the love of God through your actions. The blessing has been overwhelming.

8 Hours and 3 States Later...
May 22 - 2006

Well for those of you who don't know, I am currently in Iowa visiting my parents. I just found out last week that my dad is going to have an angiogram and most likely angioplasty, scheduled for this Wednesday morning. We are having a nice visit, I brought Dozer with me, so my parents- dog lovers that they are- are enjoying having him around too.

It's funny sometimes how God works things out. A few weeks ago, I decided officially to leave my design job at the construction company to pursue my own business "for real" this time and not just as an "on the side" thing. So, I put in my two weeks, and I am actually continuing to do some contract work for them as well. I have 2 projects going with a friend, and an out of state client so it has been fun to be busy with my own thing. But the funny part is, having my own business also gives me this freedom to be able to travel and be with my parents right now. God even orchestrated a way for me to bring out Dozer with me- (it's a long story- on my way home from Iowa, I am stopping in Chicago for my birthday weekend to spend time with some good friends, and didn't want to take the dog to the hotel, etc. But it just so happened that a friend of ours has parents in Illinois, just north of Chicago who love dogs and were willing to take him for the weekend) Of course my parents tried to tell me to not go to any trouble for them (they always say that) but I just couldn't get it off my mind and new I had to come.

Although I'm not sure what will happen this week, I am sure that we are in God's hands and covered in prayer. I am just so thankful that I can be here right now to just support them and have a good visit, and be there to wait with my mom. I pray that this turns out to be no big deal- heck, God did that with John's wierd neck lump earlier this year (it disappeared)!

And to all of you who have sent me encouraging e-mails and have been praying: thank you. I have forwarded a lot of these on to my mom and dad and you have no idea how much it blessed them. In fact, I believe my dad's exact words were "I'm so glad you married into the Pottenger family". He was so blessed at the connection- that I could just email everyone for prayer, and that you all cared enough to bring it before God on our behalf. Our extended family experience has not been this way, not until my sister married into a great Christian family, and then I did the same. When you live without something for a long time, then you suddenly have it, the appreciation is great. So again, thank you. Please be in prayer for this Wednesday, 7 am. We all feel very blessed, supported and held in God's arms. I will keep you all posted as things progress.

Sevens
March 07 - 2006

Okay, it's been awhile since my last blog and since my brain is fried (we've been way too busy lately) I thought I would steal this idea from my friend Kristin's (aka Kris) blog: (thanks for the idea!) (by the way these are in no specific order) Enjoy.

Seven things I want to do before I die:

1. Relentlessly pursue who it is that God made me to be, and be it!
2. Be published in a cool design magazine
3. Own a beach house (and share with friends of course!)
4. Use every thing God has given me to another's benefit- in otherwords, be a wise steward with God's stuff and the time He has given me
5. Enable my husband to pursue his dreams (good one, Kris!)
6. Visit Italy (not just the Rome airport, darn it!)
7. Raise a family (yes, for those of you who gave up on me, I would like to do this!

Seven things I cannot do:

1. Watch scary movies (me too Kris- at least I can't watch them with my eyes open..)
2. See anyone I love hurting and not do something/See a hurt animal and not feel bad (..k..I'm stealing that one too)
3. Be on the cast of Survivor and enjoy it
4. Pay no attention to my surroundings
5. Not smile at a puppy
6. Be a strict vegetarian- I have a "once a year" steak craving.

7. Join the army (because what good would come of me being in the army?!)

Seven things that attract me to my husband:

1. His "Hot California Boy" vibe. He still has it after living here so long.

2. Have you seen how talented this man is? What can't he do?!
3. That smile
4. The way he thinks of me first and makes me feel special after "all these years" :-)
5. Brings home the Bacon (and ham!.. and has gotten me two things I've always wanted: a house and a dog)
6. He loves God and is constantly trying to learn more about Him, and asks the "why" questions. it makes me learn when he learns!
7. His genuine concern, non-judgemental nature and love of people.

Seven things I say most often:

1. I'm tired
2. "Hello, this is Amy" (my cell phone/work phone greeting!)

3. Dozer, what are you eating?!

4. Where should we go for dinner?
5. I need to do.... laundry...dishes...grocery shop
6. "This is only phase one" (referring to our house renovations)
7. I love you hus

Seven favorite series/books/magazines/authors:

1. Pride and Prejudice
2. Velvet Elvis (by Rob Bell)

3. Captivating (by John/Stasi Eldrege)
4. Dwell Magazine
5. Renovate Magazine
6. Real Simple Magazine (ok I am a magazine-aholic!)
7. Any form of design book known to man

Seven movies I watch over and over:

1. Moulin Rouge
2. Anything Adam Sandler (the man makes me laugh!!)
3. Sabrina
4. You've Got Mail
5. Chocolat
6. Sleepless in Seattle
7. Office Space

Pottenger Family-- I would love to hear what your "sevens" are! Blog away!

Mele Kaliki Maka
February 07 - 2006

Ok, so that's hawaiian for Merry Christmas (according to Bing Crosby, anyway) but heck, it's Hawaiian! Wow there are many things I am looking forward to, in addition to officially gaining another cool bro-in-law to tease. That one is a given, we love Kyle. The wedding is going to be gorgeous.

I have always wanted to go to Hawaii. I LOVE the beach. I could quite easily live there. So, obviously being a beach bum is on my list. Shopping is a given. Hmm.. just seeing the sites, such as Pearl Harbor, cool volcanos, etc. And just relaxing...

Maybe we could find a cursed tiki idol like in the Brady Bunch? (anyone remember that one?) Ok, just kidding. I guess I really like exploring, and who better to explore a new fun place with than my awesome fam. A length of uninterrupted time with them will be wonderful. Peg and I talked about doing something like this a while ago, and now Jennie's giving us all a great reason to make it happen.

And I want to find out if they really do give you lei's (sp? you know, those flower necklace thingys) when you step off the airplane.

When I grow up...
January 19 - 2006

So when I was a kid, there were two answers to what I wanted to be when I grew up. First, I LOVED dogs and wanted one so badly, and I thought being a vet would be such a fun job because you can play with dogs all day. Yeah, um, except for when I found out what a vet REALLY does, then that desire quickly vanished. (although I probably could play with dogs all day still)

Second childhood passion was any form of art/drawing. I had tons and tons of notebooks full of my people drawings. I even drew my own "yearbook" once, full of each high school class, activities, etc. (I always hated the question, "oh, who's that you're drawing?" Like it had to be an actual person or something. Come on, get some creativity people!!) The best thing in the world was a fresh piece of paper and a set of cool pens. (things I still enjoy) Oh, the possibilities. "Blank slates" are still something I love.

Oddly enough, I was also constantly re-arranging my room. (my sister Shelbi did this too, and was/is also into art so I'm sure I got some of that love from her) There was nothing better than coming up with a cool new way to rearrange things. I made night stands out of milk crates, set up my shelves and desk in different ways, displayed photos of me and my friends, poured over design books in the library. I can remember as early as junior high the wonderful night's sleep I would get the night after I rearranged my room. When we moved to the house that my parents still live in, I can remember feverishly ripping down the nasty world-map border around my room. My 8th grade graduation gift was a new comforter/sheet set and matching pillows. :-) When I tell it like that, it seems obvious what line of work I would enjoy, but it still took me a while to realize it. Bring on the blank slates!

Thoughts as we come upon another January
January 03 - 2006

Happy New Year Everyone! Just before Christmas I got the new Sara Groves CD "Add to the Beauty". As most of you know, I love Sara's music not only for the way the songs sound, but also for her honesty and depth in writing. So when I heard this song, I thought it was an appropriate start to 2006. It's called "Just Showed Up For My Own Life". Below are some lyrics that spoke to me:

...And I just showed up for my own life

and I'm standing here taking it in and it sure looks bright

I'm going to live my life inspired

look for the holy in the commonplace

open the windows and feel all that's honest and real until I'm truly amazed

I'm going to feel all my emotions

I'm going to look you in the eyes

I'm going to listen and hear until it's finally clear and it changes our lives

There are so many ways to hide

There are so many ways not to feel

There are so many ways to deny what is real

And I just showed up for my own life

And I'm standing here taking it in and it sure looks bright

Oh the glory of God is man fully alive

Oh the glory of God is man fully alive!

*****************************************************************************************

I wish you all to live 2006 "fully alive" and to the glory of God! Bring on the year! :-)

3:00 Red Bull
December 19 - 2005

My caffeine addiction grows by the day. I know this is not good, but the problem is, it works for me. Coffee in the morning, soda for lunch (at least it's diet), and my 3:00pm red bull to keep me going until the end of the day. John teases me all the time that I am an addict, which I guess is true when I structure my drive to work around the nearest Starbucks location... I guess there are worse things in the world...:-) And I know I'm not the only one out there, either.

With many windows comes much responsibility...
December 10 - 2005

Okay, so after my first week of work I figured out why I have a big office with three windows. It's to make up for the ulcer I'm getting trying to figure out all these projects. :-) First weeks of work are always overwhelming, lots of "new" to deal with. I think things will work out fine, but until then I am stuck figuring out someone else's notes and trying to stay on a construction schedule for this condo project. I like to be very organized when I work on interiors projects, just because there are so many details to get right and it's very easy for things to slip through the cracks and make your clients mad at you. So, for now I am trying to figure out the existing organizational system (flawed though it may be) and then work on something better. Everyone I work with is great and they seem to have confidence in me, so that's good. :-) I think I have consumed more coffee, redbull and diet coke in this week than I have in the whole rest of the year...but I will adjust. The condo owners I talked with were all very nice, I think they're just happy to have a designer back working on the project. (my boss is too!) I have a very understanding boss who is fully aware of the learning curve, so I am thankful for that. So, I will keep you posted as things progress. I'm looking forward to my vacation in sunny California!!!

First Day
December 05 - 2005

Well I started a new job today! (yes, for those of you who don't already know, I just got hired as a designer at a Construction company. They are looking to develop a design department so they hired me!) It's a smaller company, which I really like, but bigger than my previous job.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out today that I have my own 2nd floor office, and it's huge! Yes, an office with walls and not just one window, but three windows! It's almost downtown GR but not quite. It's an area of historic/old buildings that are being renovated. Our place is kind of loft-like.

I also get to develop their resource library (lots of fun) which means I get to find cool products and meet with reps, etc. My office has enough room to house all that stuff-- I just ordered more shelves and a new filing cabinet today too. And the other really cool thing is that they have an administrative assistant, not just for me but for everyone. She was very nice and welcoming, (the only other woman in the office-- I was glad there's at least one other woman, coming from an office of all women, which I loved) and said she would order me whatever office supplies, etc., that I need. This might not be a big deal to you, but not having to order my own office supplies is a big step up in the world for me. :-) You remember I used to be an administrative assistant so I know how wonderful these people are!

My first project is a bunch of Condo units up north. Basically helping the owners with their electrical layouts, custom built-ins, color, materials & finishes and fixture selections. The kicker is that the previous designer wasn't so organized, so I am sifting through the paperwork and trying to figure things out. Plus, she kind of left them in the lurch so they are now behind on the project and we are trying to pick up the pace. The owner of the company is great, he's helping me go through everything and getting me familiar with the project. I'm excited to get started, but I feel I have a lot of work ahead of me! Keep me in your prayers regarding that--it's hard to be really busy at work with all of the crazy holiday stuff going on too. But I am so glad to be there. As always, God is at work.

Doh! Christmas Tree..
November 29 - 2005

I love Christmas, as I'm sure you all do too. But I don't know why it seems like every year decorating my Christmas tree becomes an ongoing project. (I'm not complaining, I just think it's funny that I can't decorate a tree in a day!) I never like it the first day I decorate it. When I'm finished it always feels like it's lacking something, then I go out and buy some more decorations, and play with those for a couple days until I like it. I think the thing this year is the size of the tree, it's the biggest one we've gotten yet, so that's probably why it was a little lacking at first. I usually do end up liking it, but I just can't decorate my tree in one sitting. Maybe it's the designer in me... So, our tree looks a little different than the tree on our video, but I like it much better now. :-) (I'll post a photo soon)

Random Question for Matt, Peg and Jen (if you're reading) that really has nothing to do with my Christmas blog: Have you ever heard of an orphanage in Africa (Kenya, I think) run by the Mully family? He was a street boy, became an entreprenuer due to his hard work, and wanted to help the street children so began an orphanage, financing it by selling off his wealth. He spoke at our church on Sunday, and I really enjoyed what he had to say. Not sure if you guys were familiar with his ministry. It's cool b/c he's now using his talent to start businesses that support the orphanage so they can take in even more kids. Pretty incredible.

Introducing Refresh Design
November 18 - 2005

I am happy to announce that I have found a new job. Self employment! I am currently in the process of developing my own design studio. After some deliberating and job hunting, I came to the conclusion that this is the direction God keeps pointing me toward. Lots of signs. I met with a wonderful group of designers today, all women and all independent business owners. I learned so much and was very encouraged and energized to I start out! My initial focus is residential design, but I don't want to limit myself to only that area, so we will see what develops in the next few months. I will soon have my website, www.refreshdesign.net current-- (it's still in process now) and I will announce it as soon as it's up. Right now I get to focus on the "fun stuff", such as business cards, office documents (contracts and such), business plan, website development and narrowing down what services/rates I will have. Lots to do but I am very excited. I will let you all know as things develop. Thinking about self-employment? Check out this link for reasons why it's great to be an entrepreneur right now.

Message worth Downloading
November 14 - 2005
As most of you know, it's been a busy season for John and I. As a result, we haven't been attending church as often as we usually do (call us heathens, we can take it!). Lately however we are getting back into the normal swing of things and I have really been enjoying our latest sermon series at church. So much so that I would like to share it with all of you. Click here to listen to the latest Ada Bible church messages. The messages that have especially spoken to me are from the "Studies from the Life of Samuel" series by Jeff Manion-- October 30, November 6 and November 13. I like to listen to music while working on house projects, etc., but lately I have listened to a couple of sermons while doing household stuff, or stuff on the computer. Another great message is "Crossroads--Birthright for Stew" by Brady Nemmers. Some of you have heard me talk about that one, now you can listen to it yourself. I hope you enjoy and learn too. Technology rocks.

Summers by the Pool
November 13 - 2005
So the topic is swimming...not one of my favorite things, but the first thing I thought of was my elementary school/jr. high friend Dawn's pool. Dawn was one of those friends who had everything (Latest Nintendo, huge house,  heated in-ground pool, dog, barbies galore, etc.) and was allowed to do practically everything as well. One fond memory though is spending the summers at her pool. We would make up the stupidest games and stuff to amuse ourselves until we were prunes. Then we would lay in the sun and eventually return to the water. Her mom was from the south and made an awesomely sweet iced tea too... Dawn gave me the confidence to go in the deep end (she was quite an accomplished swimmer, on a team, etc. and I could barely tread water and doggie-paddle) and by the end of the summer I could hold my own. (And it was always nice to know that someone had my back just in case) Dawn and her family eventually moved back to the south (I really don't think they dug us "Northerners" too much! :-)) but we did have lots of fun and I do wonder every now and then what she's up to. Oh for the days of lounging by the pool, eating pizza and watching movies, not a care in the world...

Back to the Blog Board...
October 29 - 2005

Well it's good to be back. Also good to have internet access again...! I am still without an official job, (official meaning I am working everyday, but the home improvement fairy doesn't pay well) and honestly there are no real leads.(insert sigh here) But, I am trudging on, and I am still semi-pursuing my own design business too. I just finished one design job on my own and it was a lot of fun so I guess we'll see what happens with that. On a better note, we are loving the new house, things are slowly improving here, and we love our street! (except for the rogue skunks who like to eat our garbage..) I am taking Dozer to the vet on Tuesday, due to his loose tooth. They are going to put him under anesthesia, pull his tooth and also give him a thorough dental cleaning job. Maybe this will end his dog breath? :-) Anyway, I guess that's it for the moment. I hope the rest of you Pottengers follow suit and blog soon! :-)

Somewhere in the middle
October 09 - 2005

Well we are almost all the way moved in to our new house. We decided to keep our clothes and bed in the old house until a couple more things are finished. (upstairs floors and upstairs bathroom) We have the old house until Saturday morning at 10am. We have to move our computer stuff this week too (we didn't want to move it until the dsl is hooked up in the new house) It was fun last night though, after the day's hustle & bustle, John & Ryan hooked up the TV in the basement and we uncovered the furniture and watched an episode of "Lost". Our house is starting to feel like home a little more each day. Thanks also go to our loyal friends who helped us with the stinky job of moving. (and thanks to other friends who have fed us, helped us scrape wallpaper, etc.) Yea friends! (Boo wallpaper!) So until next week we are in between the 2 houses moving over the last few things. At least we're over half done!

God Opens a Window
October 02 - 2005
I'm back from a wonderful girls weekend in California. (I have an awesome family-I loved the time spent with my in-laws, because they don't feel like in-laws to me, they are friends, and it was so fun getting to know Kris' friends and their daughters too)  I think I needed it to prep me for the chaos that awaited me at home. For those of you who don't know, right before my trip I was downsized from my job. So I am currently on the hunt for new employment (I have a 2nd interview this week, and a new freelance client, so that's a start!), packing up to move, and gutting our new house. Lots going on. I will keep you all posted as to the job situation, and we will soon have photos of our very own extreme home makeover. (Where's that darn Ty when you need him??) Amidst the chaos though, John and I both feel very blessed and thankful...we are waiting to see what God has next!

When dogs talk...
September 13 - 2005

So you're having a bad day, nothing going right? Do you just need a laugh or at least a smile? In the mood for ridiculous nonsense? Well then, check out www.thetalkingpug.com I randomly found it the other day- (it was aol's tv moment of the year) this woman trained her pug to say "I love you". She was on Letterman's  "stupid pet tricks" (the video is on the web site) and I about laughed my head off when I watched it. (Dozer freaked out when he heard it--I think he was jealous) So there you go, you have your stupid fun for the day!

Smells Like Fall (Random September Thoughts)
September 06 - 2005

We are rapidly approaching what I consider to be my favorite season. Autumn. So many reasons to like fall - beautiful color (especially in Michigan), warm days with a slight chill in the air at night, bonfires, football games, the occasional hayride, apple cider, reading a book all cozy by a fireplace, pumpkin spice lattes, new sweaters. It's such a cozy season, yet doesn't have the freezing factor associated with winter. The outside is comfortable enough you don't have to wear a coat, but not boiling hot. I love the brilliant-ness (okay that's not a word) of color- it's so vibrant here- even more so than it was in Iowa (and they have pretty fall seasons too). And I think a small part of me loves how fleeting it is-- just a few weeks of beautiful color, then onto the drab winter (not my favorite season)- it's like the last splash of color before a whitewash of winter hits. I think it makes me appreciate it more. God is definitely the author of creativity!

From "Designed to Sell" to "Extreme Home Makeover"
September 02 - 2005

As you probably already saw in our news section, we sold our house! (Thank you Lord!) It was actually kind of fun getting our house ready (I know you think I'm crazy, but I also like to hang out at Home Depot, so consider the source)-- lots of work but when we were done we had this beautiful, good smelling, flower filled, uncluttered place to live. :-) (and it actually stayed clean for almost a week!) I have to thank all of our wonderful friends who helped us get our house in top selling condition! Without them I don't think the work would've gotten done. Yay Friends!

It's funny the things you do for other people that you don't make time to do for yourself. Oh well, it's part of selling, and my head is swimming with ideas for the new house. With the Cheshire house I am putting together an M. Drake Environments (where I work) "portfolio" for myself, and I'm excited about that. A "portfolio" is essentially a project binder that we put together for our clients at work. It's a "brain" that holds all drawings, materials & finishes selections, estimates for furnishings and work to be done - everything from kitchen cabinets to bedding to picture frames. I am already narrowing down paint colors. My first goal is just to get a paint "palette" for the house. (palette meaning a selection of color that will flow through the home) And to rip out most of the carpet (I hope the hard wood floors are in good condition, we'll see!). But I guess I should probably pack first, hmm? :-)

Which box is Dozer in??!
August 19 - 2005
I promise to blog soon-- after this week. Have you ever seen the HGTV show "designed to sell"? Well, that's us until our open house next week Sunday. Please pray for us that we'll get things done (we are too busy!!) and the right buyers will come along soon! Can't believe we are moving! :-) I feel way too blessed and thankful right now. We will have lots of room for all of you when we have the next "Christmas at the Pottenger Inn". :-) I'll write more soon.

Dozer's Film Debut
August 05 - 2005
Well today was John's first day of shooting. I think everything went great, we reviewed the shots tonight and I was amazed! I came into things later in the morning, I had to chauffer one of the stars to the set. (Dozer) Yes, Dozer made his appearance in the film, and you'll just have to wait to see where. :-) It was a beautiful day, but a little hot by Dozer's standards. I think we tired him out. (Lucky for him, he had Evian on standby) Later in the afternoon we put the set together for a scene in an apartment. I was really happy with how things turned out, and it was a lot of fun to do. The crew is awesome, everyone giving more than 100 percent all on a volunteer basis. It's pretty crazy when you think about it, all of these people donating their time, but I will let John blog about that one. :-) It was fun to be a part of things and see John in his element, having a great time. Keep us in your prayers for our Saturday/Sunday shoots! So far, so good.

The next dynamic duo?
July 25 - 2005
So thanks to my husband I get to try my hand at set design. I am pretty excited, mainly because I get to be a part of one of John's cool projects. We had a production meeting this morning and scouted a location (a hotel entrance) and I got to kind of sit back and observe it all. Actually, producing is much like interior design-- lots of details, deadlines, project management, and unforseen problems that just pop up and you have to make things work. I am also excited to see how it goes for us to work together on a project. (I'll need something to do if we move to LA, right? :-)) Is the world ready for "Pottenger and Pottenger"? I give it 2 thumbs up.

Lovin' the Sales
July 15 - 2005

If you know me, you know I love to shop. I also love getting quality things for less than the normal price. I think it's my version of hunting... anyway, I recently came across Ann Taylor's last chance sale, where they take 40% off of the sale prices. I found some really cute, well made shirts for great prices. My favorite part is to look at the tag, and see how many price stickers are on it-- the original price, the first time they reduced the price, then the second time. For some reason, it's satisfying to me to look at the shirt I paid $12 for that originally cost $50!! I love that!! (so if you feel like shopping for summer clothes, now is a good time) Happy Hunting!

Look how cute my parents are!

Happy anniversary! You may not have had a big wedding, but your marriage is pretty big in my book. Have a special day! We love you.

wallpaper = hate
July 02 - 2005

Can you tell that I have been busy ripping down a wallpaper border this weekend? (I'm currently taking a break from painting prep in our master bedroom) Now I can truly feel for my friends who have moved into great new homes but have to rip down sheep wallpaper. (that one is true) It might not sound like much, but ripping off just one little border really stinks. And the best part is, I put it up when we moved in. In a fit of stupidity to get something on the walls...never again. At least, I never want to rip any off again. Now that I've said that, I'm sure whatever our next house is will be covered in wallpaper. Oh, well. At least I'm nearly done. I am starting to feel like one of those people on the HGTV resell your home-makeover show (I can't think of the name of the show) really, that's why I'm doing all of this. At least we will get to enjoy it for a little while too! Back to work...

"Inspiration" by Chicago
June 21 - 2005

Last week on Monday and Tuesday, I was in Chicago for an office furniture tradeshow called "NeoCon". My boss and I went to hear designer Barbara Barry give a lecture at the art museum on Tuesday evening, talking about "Design Inspiration".

Ms. Barry is quite accomplished-- she has a line of furniture with just about all of the good companies out there, residential and contract, and is also designing flooring as well as Baccarat crystal, in addition to her namesake design firm. All that being said, I think she knows what she's talking about.

One of her points was that we need to "protect the spirit of inspiration". She meant that inspiration almost never comes when you are trying to be inspired. It comes while you're driving home from work and have no pen. :-) So, to "protect the spirit of inspiration", you must realize that inspiration can come at any moment, when you least expect it, so you'd better be prepared.

She explained that she almost always has some kind of pen and paper with her. (yes, napkins can count for paper)  So, if you keep track of your momentary inspirations, write them down and remember them, you have something to draw from later.

This applies to more than just design. For example, it could also apply to gift-giving. You know, it's a week before your friends/husband's/parent's birthday and you want to get the "perfect present". And all you can think of is the same old thing. Well, maybe if you pay attention, you might have already found that gift a month ago. And yes, there is a spiritual correlation as well. Pay attention, you never know when God has something to show you.

So I urge you to find your "spirit of inspiration" and keep it around. So many people nowadays are uninspired, don't you think?

An "Amy" kind of Birthday...
June 04 - 2005

So I am officially 26, as of May 26. (Does this mean I can now have a "quarter-life crisis? I'll have to work on that..) Anyway, I had a fun & relaxing day. I took the day off of work, basically because I have such a flexible work schedule,so I thought, why not? So, I got my hair done, went shopping- a cute little boutique store in Rockford called "Jade", and did a couple of errands that I had been meaning to do forever.

Then, John took me out to dinner (my pick, of course :-)) and we went to the Macaroni Grill, a fave Italian place. (also a Jennie Pottenger favorite!) Then the fun really began. In true creative "John Pottenger" style, he had come up with a creative birthday gift.

He took me to Rivertown mall (a nice new mall that we don't go to very often), and had organized varying amounts of money into a series of envelopes. (Dave Ramsey would be so proud) Inside each envelope was the name of a store, and a certain amount of cash. The idea is, I had to purchase at least something from the store, but I didn't have to use all of the money. I didn't know what the stores were until I opened the envelope. Money left over from previous stores could be saved until the last store, or used at the next store. It was pretty fun. And he did a good job of picking out stores too. Major husband points were earned. :-)

The day after my b-day, we left to visit Sam & Shelbi, so that was kind of a birthday treat too, to get to see them and the kids. We had lots of fun- if you haven't yet, you've got to see the photos in the Pictures section. So, all in all, being 26 has worked out well so far. :-)

I'm one of "those people"...
May 18 - 2005

Well, last Saturday I ran my "big race". The kicker, however, is my big race, turned into a small 5k. I decided about a week before the race to switch from the 25K (15.whatever miles) to the 5K (3.whatever miles). That last minute asthma-allergy thing really threw me off training wise, and I was just not ready. To be honest, I felt like a big fat idiot. The kind of person who flakes out at the last minute and makes excuses. Oh well, it is what it is. John was being nice to me and told me it wasn't a big deal, you can't help a health problem, and at least I ran something anyway. And I did get a lot of good exercise. I think next time I decide to do a race I will train, and then sign up the day before so I don't have all that pressure on me. The day of the race it was pouring down rain but it actually wasn't too bad. I would rather have it rainy and a little cold then hot. Except my shoes got all sloshy towards the end and that made me go slower. :-) My work friends however, fared quite well and finished the 25k. Our pastor finished in under 2 hours! (a big accomplishment) so we were impressed. :-) As soon as John gets home, I'll have him download the race photos to our pictures section so you can check it out. Needless to say, I will not begin a professional racing career any time soon. Or ever....! Tennis, anyone??

Don't mess with my Latte, Lady
May 06 - 2005
So this morning on the way to work I stopped at Starbucks. Big deal, right? Well, this time I happened to run in to the Starbucks at a Meijer- not a REAL Starbucks. And let me tell you who think there is no difference- there is. Unless of course, you view coffee in your latte as optional. ( I should also mention that this mistake has never happened to me while visiting a "Real" starbucks location) This is the second time that I have gone to a "grocery store" starbucks where I ordered a coffee drink, and ended up with a disgusting combination of milk and vanilla flavoring. (sorry to those of you who happen to like "steamers") Plus, being the morning and all, the coffee part was rather vital to my day. Since the first time this happened, I learned to always drink immediately to make sure all is well. Today I was glad I did. So, caution to all of you grocery store or bookstore Starbucks goers- you can do it, but it's a gamble so drink before you leave or you will pay the price of the coffeeless latte...

Breathing Easier...Almost
April 25 - 2005

Went to the Dr. today, I feel like I was just there, (I was 2 weeks ago for a sinus infection). But this time I had to blow into a machine and it charted how strong my lungs are. It was pretty cool. And, I found out that I have 93% lung capacity, which is good. So, because of my symptoms the doctor said that it was an allergy related effect on my breathing. Bronchial irritation or something like that. He gave me a sample of Advair (an inhaler) and said it should get me through until the race, so that was nice that I didn't have to get a whole prescription. The Dr. said that he had the same problem and only ran the Riverbank run once b/c it was too hard with his allergies, so that made me feel better. I used it today, and ran about 2.7 miles. I still walked some, but I felt like I had a better workout than before. I know the stuff takes a little time to kick in, too, but it felt like it helped a little today. So, 2 weeks to go...then I can REALLY breathe easy. Keep praying for me, I need it.

Not Peter Lumbergh (office space reference)
April 25 - 2005
Amy & MargoI have a cool boss. I just thought I would let you all know. In fact, this morning she took me out to get a manicure, as a thank you for my hard work in putting an event together this weekend. This is not the first time she has done something cool like that, either. I have to say that I really enjoy working in an office full of women. It is just a great environment. Maybe it works well because it's a small business, but these women are quality and I truly enjoy working with them. And to all you office space fans, we share the stapler. ( a swingline, I believe.)  Ummm... yeah..... :-)

It's Spring, Dang it!
April 19 - 2005

Well Michigan is putting it's best foot forward. The past couple of weeks have been absolutely beautiful here, weather wise. Every day we're throwing open the windows, going for walks, and we even had a picnic last Wednesday. (Dozer enjoyed harassing the ducks!) Our tulips and daffodils greet me every time I pull in the driveway.

But, there is only one downside to spring, I think I have discovered another allergy issue. I already have the typical "hayfever" and take Flonase, a nasal inhaler that works great. But, ever since we got back from our California vacation, I noticed that I was having trouble breathing during my runs. So, through a little investigation, I think I have exercise-induced asthma. I am scheduled to see the allergist next week-- but this is a bit of a problem because I am less than a month away from my big race, and haven't been able to complete the mileage for training. I thought it was a fluke at first, but each time I ran the same thing happened- Just before I reached the 1 mile mark, I would cough alot, my throat/chest would feel tight, and I would just have to stop. No big asthma attack or anything scary like that though, so that's good. The earliest I could get in to the doctor is next Thursday! So I am a bit worried about the race. I am still signed up and going, and I guess I'll do what I can. All I want to do is finish, but  yet another roadblock. UGH!!!

Gatorade and Gu Packs
March 11 - 2005
Today I uncovered my secret weapon. Gu. Yes, you read that correctly. My boss introduced me to a wonderful energy source for my long weekend runs. It's called "Gu" or also "Power Gel". Basically, it's concentrated sugar/carbs, but it is a great energy boost for longer bouts of exercising. I guess triathletes use it, that's where my boss first heard of it. I could definitely tell the difference this week- I was tired at the end, but still felt like I could keep going. It was so encouraging! (imagine that, an 8 mile run was encouraging...) It helped that last weekend was a sunny 50 degree weekend too. It was truly enjoyable to be outside. And I also got some gatorade to go along with my water, for after the run to rehydrate. I tell you this whole training thing is making me feel like a big science experiment. What are the right conditions that allow the most endurance, make me go faster, not get tired, etc, etc.... The saga continues...

Technological Motivation
March 04 - 2005
Yay! I got my "ipod shuffle" today! On the website they say it's as big as a pack of gum, but my pack of gum (Orbit) is actually bigger than the shuffle. Anyway, I am midway through my training, and somehow I am expected to run 8 miles tommorow. Yes, that is not a typo. Honestly, I have no idea what I was thinking when I signed on for this race...a moment of temporary insanity for sure... but I am still plugging away. I don't plan on quitting, but at this point, it doesn't seem humanly possible for me to do this. (It's 15 miles). I like exercising, but sometimes I get just plain bored with running. And a foot of snow doesn't do wonders for motivation. All that being said, my "technological treat" this week was a definite aid in my training. It gave me something else to look forward to, to keep me going. So off I go, even if they have to haul me over the finish line on a stretcher... Needless to say, your prayers are greatly appreciated! At least I'll have good music.

Husband Brainwashing
March 01 - 2005
So I realized today that being married to my wonderful guy has resulted in me being a little bit brainwashed. For instance, I now get excited about technological stuff that I never would have cared about before-- don't get  me wrong, the minute you start rambling about gigabites and whoosy whatsits, I fall asleep, but here is a list of things I love and never thought I would: TiVo, that gadget thingy that automatically turns on our lights, my ipaq, wireless internet.. I am sure there are more. The other day at work we had a computer repair guy in to fix something, and to my amazement I understood half of what he said (before it would have been nothing). I owe this credit to my husband. The last straw was when I was looking forward to a trip to Best Buy this week- we went and I was the one wanting to look at everything, flat screen tv's, cool laptops, etc. But even with all the brainwashing, the best part is that I can say "that's a cool (insert name of technology here ______)" and buy it, and hand him the manual. :-) He's my 24 hour tech support.

Amy + iPod = LOVE
February 21 - 2005

Lately John has been letting me use his ipod when I run. I am starting to love that thing! Today for instance, while at the gym, I was not only able to use it on the treadmill but also while using the weight machines too. It was pretty cool. I love strapping that thing on my arm and not having to worry about my tunes! Oh, modern conveniences.. I am STILL waiting to receive my "shuffle" in the mail- for those of you who don't know, it's like an ipod but built more for exercising- it's smaller and doesn't have a big display screen. So I am glad that John is sharing his gift with me. :-) And- dad pottenger will appreciate this- I am not a big lover of the mac. I admire their aesthetic product design, I love how their products look- but I believe one of my comments to John was "did monkeys design this thing??" (referring to the operating system, not how cute it is) The ipod is just an exception to the rule. I use an imac at work, so I am getting more familiar, and the ipod is cool, but don't worry Don, I am still a P.C. girl. :-)

One Thing After Another
January 29 - 2005
Well, the chiropractor managed to fix my back, which is great! But, the same day, I came down with a cold. I just can't win this week-  I feel as though somethings working against me. I was supposed to be doing my 5 mile long run today, but instead I slept 12 hours and watched way too many episodes of "The Gilmore Girls". I am hoping the zicam will kick in soon. Until then, I guess I'll make some tea and enjoy the cuddle time with Dozer. I'll get my run in soon, I hope. But at least my back doesn't hurt!

Pavement:1 Amy:0
January 27 - 2005
Ok, I don't like to sound negative, but there's no getting around this one. Michigan autumn is one of the most gorgeous sights ever, and even the first snow fall holds a special beauty. But, come on, it's January. I guess the real source of my current winter-hatred is a run-in I had yesterday with a sidewalk. Yes you read that correctly. You see, during winter in Michigan, pavement is the enemy. In other words, while walking from my car to work, I had a nasty fall on the ice. Not only did I have bruised pride (I did manage to save my coffee so the day wasn't totally ruined) but also a bruised everything else. I thought at the time I was ok, but I barely got any sleep last night because I was so sore. (bring on the Tylenol PM) I feel like a 95 year old woman with arthritis... not fun...but anyway, I have a Chiropractor appointment first thing tomorrow, so I am praying that he can fix me, otherwise, training for my race is going to be a heck of a lot more painful.. I will keep you posted. (Let me know if there are any good job opportunities out there in snow & ice- free California...they have never looked more appealing :-))

Training, Donkeys, and the Bible
January 25 - 2005

I am about in my 2nd or 3rd week of training for my 25k in May, and I have just hit the "4" mile mark. Today I ran for 4 miles, more than I ever have in my life. I did have to do the "run/walk" thing a couple of times so I didn't collapse, but I did pretty well in my opinion. Which makes up for last week when I was a lazy donkey-butt and only ran once...:-) I blame it on the foot of snow that dropped out of the sky on Saturday. I did do the stationary bike though. Just not enough running. Well I'm through going that route, it seems that whenever you stop training it's so easy to keep not- training, if that makes sense. Thankfully, there is such a thing as social pressure. People asking, "how's the training coming", etc. Since I am a bad liar, I have to tell them the truth when I haven't been running, so it motivates me to keep going. Like right now for instance, I ran 4 miles today!! (sounds so much better than "I watched 2 hours of Friends re-runs!") Hmm..I can totally see how running has been paralleled with Christianity in the Bible. Think about what I just said about my training, doesn't it sometimes pertain to our lives as Christians? Funny, that wasn't going to be my point at all in this blog, but it was so obvious to me just now that I had to mention it, so you can draw your own conclusions. Anyway, on to tommorow to "run the race that has been set before me..." (no more lazy donkey-butt!)

Amy Pottenger, Allied ASID
January 24 - 2005

Hey, just thought I'd tell you all that today I got a cool title after my name! I have been accepted into the "American Society of Interior Designers" as an allied member. So now on my business cards it will say, Amy Pottenger, Allied ASID. It's a membership into a professional design organization, so I am pretty excited. I guess I'm ready for my HG-TV show now.

Nice People
January 21 - 2005

Take the time today to stop, and appreciate the nice people you come across. (even if they are few and far between) You know who I'm talking about, the lady that smiles at you at the grocery store, the cashier who actually says hello to you and "have a nice day" like he really wants you to have a nice day, the person who strikes up a conversation with you while waiting in line for something, etc. Sometimes those people just make my day. I went to the dentist this week (blech) but I had the nicest dental hygenist. It turns out that she has 2 pugs, and in between all the gross teeth stuff (no cavities, yea!) we had a really nice conversation. Now, she could have just been boring and kept to herself and only asked me about the health of my gums, but instead, I got to see a hilarious picture of her dogs in santa hats. That made me smile. So next time you are shopping at Tar-Jay and in a foul mood, watch out, there just might be a nice person waiting around the corner to make your day.

Ode to "Tiny" or "Yo Quero Taco Bell?"
January 12 - 2005

This is, unfortunately, a sad blog. I am sorry to report that my parent's crazy (and I say that with love) Chihuahua has passed on. Yes, Tiny had his cujo-resembling moments, but he was our little cujo and we will miss him. :-) That little dog has been around since I was in the 8th grade. Isn't it funny how animals are just another member of the family? I remember when those Taco Bell commercials were all the rage and I would take Tiny for a walk- I actually had cars stop and people say "Yo Quero Taco Bell?" to us. It was pretty funny. Even though I sometimes don't admit it, Tiny was my first dog (don't tell Dozer) and I will miss him quirks and all. :-) Shown below is my dad, Dozer & Tiny.

Return of "The Blog"
January 10 - 2005

Hello again, I thought since it's been about a month since my last entry, it was time to write again. Yes I have been a little busy getting the house ready for the fam, then Christmas, New Years at my parent's house, then coming home, dismantleing the Christmas decorations, etc., so here I am. Anyway, I have been busy, but I enjoyed the Holidays so much. It was great to have everyone here (can you believe there were 9 people living in our house?! :-)) and also great to go and see my fam too. (especially my nieces) And to you Pottengers/Botts's- I couldn't have asked for better houseguests. They cooked AND cleaned up! You are all welcome back anytime. Although now that we have had Christmas in Michigan and in California, how about Hawaii next year? Any takers? :-)

No, this was not a New Year's Resolution
January 10 - 2005
So I decided that I need to run a 25K. No, I have not gone temporarily insane, I thought it would be a fun challenge. Plus, the more people I tell, the harder it is not to do it. :-) I owe most of the credit to my boss, Margo. She is a tri-athlete (just finished an Iron Man in Florida last year with her husband Steve) and she suggested that we should all run together in the Riverbank Run, in downtown GR in May. So, armed only with my trusty training schedule, a good CD and some high tech running clothes, off I go. My co-worker Dana and I and Margo will be running in the race. Dana is a "newbie" to races too, so we're in this together. I did run a 5K last year, so on to a new challenge! As the weeks progess, I will keep you posted as to how it's going. As they say, if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger. I'll let you know which category I fall into...

Haul out the Holly, Darn it!! :-)
December 16 - 2004
I know that Christmas isn't just about the presents, (of course) but I just thought I'd share my enjoyable Christmas shopping experience with you all. Yes, I said enjoyable. The stores weren't too crowded (it was a Thursday night, I think that helped), people were actually friendly (that's a rarity for sure), and I found what I was looking for. (even something for Dozer) Woo hoo. I love days like that! I think I enjoyed the experience more than usual b/c the past couple years I shopped mostly online. Anyway, I hope you are all having the same luck. (p.s.- lots of Christmas decorations were already marked 50% off and Old Navy was having a good sale- really cute wrapping paper for $1.50! :-)) Enjoy your holiday! Looking forward to seeing everyone soon!!

Yay!! Gingerbread Lattes!!
November 17 - 2004

Peg, you inspired me with one of your blogs about Christmas. I too love the holiday! One of my favorite Anderson family traditions is our "Christmas Eve Christmas" where mom makes homemade pizza and we have chips and that wonderful AE onion dip :-) and we open presents. We each take turns and watch everyone open their gifts. It is especially fun when my nieces (Elanor & Amaryah) are involved. Then we all have dessert (a lot of times, it's artfully decorated Christmas sugar cookies- Shelbi (my sister) is especially good at this) and we watch a movie ("It's a Wonderful Life", anyone?). It is always such a cozy and happy feeling to have all of my family in the same room.

All that being said, I want to hear from you- what are some of your favorite holiday traditions?

Magazine Junkie
November 13 - 2004

I have so many magazines. I don't know when this obsession started, but I just love magazines. I enjoy books too, but there is just something about glossy photos and short but useful articles that I like. (maybe this has something to do with me having a plethora of useless knowledge...) Plus if you really like something, you can rip out the page. (people tend to get mad when you rip pages out of their books..) I guess it goes along with my profession, (all the design magazines keep me informed about my work, trends, new projects & resources, etc.) but I think I need to do some recycling soon.

All this being said however, I have to plug a particular magazine called "real simple". (Kris loves this one too) I just subscribed this year, and it is such a great read. If the title alone doesn't capture you (isn't everyone trying to simplify these days?) the contents will. It has great home organization articles, price comparision articles (like they will compare 10 classic button down white shirts, price and all, and tell you their favorite and why), easy recipes and ways to decorate, etc. Anyway, they aren't paying me for my testimonial so I'll stop now, but I do look forward to my issue every month! (I added the link to their site also if you want to check it out.)

Heaven is a place on Earth? or, "The Eternal Blog"
November 10 - 2004

I have a question for all of you philosophical minds out there. As I said before in my blogs, I have been reading "journey of desire". Well, the last chapter I read was so interesting- the author talks about how many Christians view Heaven as a place where a bunch of free form Christian souls are floating around, and all we do is sing hymns all the time, forever and ever, amen.

Eldrige (the author) says that "When we conceive of our future existence as something ghostly, mysterious, completely "other" than anything we've ever known, we place it beyond all hoping for. The "otherness" of it takes away its power. But look at the first example- Jesus. What happens to him after he dies? He is resurrected, of course. As someone or something else? No, as Himself, only healed and very much alive. Then what- float around? No, he has breakfast.."

The author goes on to quote John 21:4-12, where Jesus appears to the disciples while they are fishing- tells them to cast their nets on the right side of the boat, the disciples eventually recognize Jesus as Himself, and then they all have breakfast together. The author goes on to say-- "Do you see that eternal life does not become something totally "other" but rather that life goes on- only as it should be?"

There was so much more to this chapter (Revelation- new Jerusalem descending from Heaven to Earth- God dwelling with His people, Rev. 21:5- Jesus making "all things new", Romans 8:19-21-restored earth) but this blog is already too long and I know I've lost half of you out there. :-) Anyway, his theory was, what if our eternal existence as Christians is just, continued life on the new earth, only, life as God meant it to be in the first place? I know we can't ever really "know" until it happens, but it got my mind thinking differently about eternity. What do you think?

Early Thanksgiving
November 06 - 2004
Do you ever have a day- or even a moment- where you stop and realize how blessed you are? That was my experience today. Nothing major happened, nothing out of the ordinary, and that's exactly why I feel blessed. Blessed to have a husband who rakes leaves AND cleans out the fridge with me :-), blessed to have a warm living room where I can sit with friends and eat pizza and watch Star Wars, blessed to have a family that I actually look forward to being with. No, I don't "have it all", and never will, at least until I see Heaven someday and truly realize what the phrase "have it all" means, but I felt compelled today to remind everyone to look around and realize the goodness of our God.

Eldridge Books
November 04 - 2004
Jen- to answer your question I have heard of "wild at heart" and the "sacred romance" but haven't read either one. I know this author has a few books out now- I think there is even a newer one than "journey of desire". I just love his sense of honesty and how he doesn't try to give you "5 steps to finding your desire" or something like that. Also, this book isn't written specifically to men or women, so I think both genders would enjoy.

A Good Read
October 18 - 2004
Hi all, I have managed to wrestle the computer away from the dog for the moment. (he's chewing a bone) And he enjoyed Tiny's comments by the way. Anyway, I wanted to share that I am reading a really great book right now in my women's Bible study. It's called "the journey of desire" by John Eldridge. (sp?) It's hard to explain what it's all about in a simple blog, but it has really made me stop and think more deeply about how I look at life. It talks about the desires that God gives us, how we often bury them in our busyness, or with the wrong desires, and how truly following your "hearts desire" can change your life. There are so many things I could share, but I think you should read them for yourself. :-) We need more passionate Christians out there. Can I get an "amen"?!

Woof
October 11 - 2004
Hi everyone- John and Amy are at work and I'm bored, so I decided to take over and do my own dog blog. I just had to share that I finally got the chance to pee on this new weed in our neighbor's yard. John and Amy finally came home, I thought I'd never see them again. But, lucky for me, there was this cute redhead here to take care of me. They were quite thoughtful to not mention the "A" word (Amy) in my presence so I wouldn't be too sad. But things are back to normal now thankfully, I get to hog Amy's lap and not let her do anything but pet me. I also get to wrestle with John again and get some exercise (not that I need it- I'm big boned, you know) Ooh-- I got to go-- I think I heard the treat box....*snort*  luv ya, Dozer the pug

Creation Revelation
October 09 - 2004
One of the best things about California (other than all the family that is here) has to be the landscape. I had the chance to go to three different beaches this week, and all of them were different and beautiful in their own way. There is nothing like the Ocean to put you in your place- and make you feel small in the span of things. It is one of the few places that I can go and just stand and stare for hours and be entertained. I found myself unexpectedly singing praise to God in my head and just standing there praying, smiling, all because of how this expanse of water at my feet made me feel. It is hard to imagine someone taking in the ocean and still thinking that there is no God. It pleased my soul to think of the beauty God created in the earth-- and then think-- this is no match for heaven.

Saugatuck 5K
September 22 - 2004

Well here I am again. I just had to share that I completed my first 5K last Saturday! It was pretty fun, I ran with my boss Margo and a friend from work, Amber. The race was in Saugatuck (a really cute little town for those of you who don't know that) and the day couldn't have been more gorgeous. Yay for me!

Blog, Schmog
September 15 - 2004
Hi everybody! I can't imagine what you all will find interesting about these entries, but I will most likely write about design, since that's something I love. Maybe a few cool websites too. Also, I will constantly be plugging awesome Mary Kay products!! Maybe some make-up tips as well, new trends, whatever. I also just started reading the book "journey of desire" for my women's small group, so I can share any insights, etc. And maybe an occasional update about Dozer the pug. Hmm.. maybe Dozer should have his own blog...
